Dr. Gavan Duffy is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in total hip and knee replacements. He received his medical degree from the University of Dublin in Ireland. After finishing his medical degree, Dr. Duffy moved to the United States and accepted a residency at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic. He later completed an adult reconstructive surgery fellowship at Harvard Medical School and a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, both in Boston, MA.
After completing his education, Dr. Duffy worked at Mayo Clinic from 2001 to 2008. While there, he was an associate professor of orthopedics and also held the title for Director of the Hip Fellowship training program. In addition to his extensive training, Dr. Duffy participated in two hip and one knee replacement design teams. He also worked with manufacturing teams for hip and knee replacements.
Dr. Duffy is the former Medical Director for the Orthopedic Center of Excellence and the former Chief of Orthopedics at Ascension St. Vincent’s Medical Center Southside. Dr. Duffy has been with Southeast Orthopedic Specialists since 2008. He performs 850 total joint replacements each year and has completed over 16,000 total hip and knee replacements throughout his career. He is currently the Medical Director for Memorial Hospital’s Center of Joint Replacement.

Very pleasant, intelligent, and right to the point! I came in, fully expecting to be told I needed to have a total knee replacement. But options were explained, and I had a cortisone injection right then. It was not at all painful!!!! I was then fitted for a brace. Upon returning home, a few hrs later , I noticed immediate relief. Having pain for the past year, which the past couple months, was vey excruciating and debilitating!! In the few days, since the injection, I feel much better!

It’s been 9 years now since both knees had to replaced. I had to get a check recently for an FAA medical as I’m a pilot. The work he did is still in excellent shape and closing me up, you need a magnifying glass to see my scar. We all heal differently I know. Point is his work in my case was exemplary. Im 61 going on 21 extremely active, and the human parts around the knee act up if I over do it. Weird mostly cramps and such but that’s my body not his work. I’ll never forget our first meeting, I made the mistake of asking about different prosthetics,’and somewhat arrogant, he told me patients don’t get to choose what he uses…they would be the best but the question I should be asking is his experience. Hearing about my left hip replacement in 2008 he sent me in for Metal blood work, MRI and Xrays of that hip He mentioned in 2008-09 2 manufacturers stopped selling my particular femur head. Dr. Duffy has performed joint replacement surgery on both of my knees, one in December 2014 and the other in February 2015. After surgery and completion of therapy my knees the pain I dealt with for years was gone. I have not had any issues with them since. I see Dr Duffy annually for a check up. Everything is great. Dr. Duffy addressed all my questions and concerns before I could even ask. He was even aware that my insurance would cover a procedure. I have not had an appointment for over a year, so X-rays had to be done. He did not make me feel bad about not keeping up with my cortisone injections, but did make me feel good about losing 17 pounds since my last visit, and made sure I knew what a plant based diet was by asking me questions in what I eat. Dr. Duffy performed my total right knee replacement after trying several nonsurgical remedies. He is very patient and explains everything in detail using easy to understand language. My knee replacement surgery was a work of art by a skilled craftsman. I had a minimum of pain post op, zero complications and recovery was much, much easier than the horror stories I heard from other knee replacement patients. I feel like my body is an old broken down jalopy that has to get joint replacement and back and cervical surgeries one after another from accidents and age. I had a rt knee replacement in 2000 that was a nightmare experience with a terribly long recovery. I finally had my left knee done by Dr Duffy and I can't say enough good about the skill level of this doctor and the organization of his team. no one is perfect but this is as near perfect a situation as I have ever experienced. At 69 years old this knee replacement has been smooth and successful and an accelerated healing even after the first two weeks of pain and discomfort. My leg is straight at 3 months out I have next to no pain at all and the scar is disappearing to a hairline. Next will be the left hip. I am 10 months post op left knee replacement and 14 months post op right knee replacement. I am thrilled beyond words with my new knees. For many years I was having severe pain in both knees and having major mobility issues the past 2 years before my surgeries. Dr. Duffy and my knee implants have given me my life back. Dr. Duffy is the best orthopedic doctor. When he saw me I had been in pain for over a year as many doctors thought it was my back. He knew it was my hip and wanted to try cortisone shot and therapy, but nether helped. He scheduled my surgery and his staff was very thorough with me. My husband was involved with the class we took and all the testing I needed prior to my surgery. The day of surgery Dr. Duffy promised me no more pain. He was so right. Dr Duffy is amazing. My surgery (total knee replacement) was scheduled for the afternoon, after which he was the patient of a back surgery. Following morning I’m in PT and here he comes in his hospital gown using a walker to check on me. What service. Dedicated all the way. In addition to being an excellent surgeon, he is extremely personable and makes the entire process so manageable, Both before and after surgery his care is beyond what is expected. DR. Gavin Duffy has been my doctor for two knee replacements. Left knee in February 2010 and right knee in December 2016. In both cases the knee surgery, professional care was flawless. Dr. Duffy is such a brilliant surgeon. I was a nervous wreck when I went into the hospital for my knee replacement. Dr. Duffy personally came in to talk to me before I went into the operating room. had to have knee replacement and the doctors at Costal Spine recommended Dr. Duffy. Had several shots in knee (left). After several months of shots, we decided to go ahead and do the replacement. I had been in severe pain for almost 3 years due to a Major Clinic in jacksonville telling me that my leg pain was all due to my back problems. Dr Duffy was thorough and sent me to a neurosurgeon for a consult before doing total right hip surgery to make sure . I can now walk ,standing up straight,without leg pain. Everything about my experience was great! Once I realized the severity of my need for surgery, I was able to pre-hab which was a great help going into physical therapy after surgery. Dr Duffy was very thorough to provide me with a diagnosis. He has a good bedside manner and explains things clearly. He even took more images and found problems with my back in addition to my hip. I have a high level of confidence in him and his experience background is superb. He honestly explained what hip surgery would do for me but also would not be fixed with that surgery.
