Dr. Rahul Deshmukh is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, advanced arthroscopy, minimally invasive joint replacement and trauma. Dr. Deshmukh received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. During his time there, he served as the assistant physician for the Boston Celtics. As a Jacksonville native, Dr. Deshmukh is proud to bring his expertise as a nationally recognized orthopedic surgeon to his local community. He is the current Chief of Orthopedics and Director of Orthopedic Center of Excellence for Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside. He also serves as the team physician for the Jacksonville Icemen hockey team.
When he is not in the office he enjoys many outdoor activities including: wind surfing, skydiving, water skiing, sailing and scuba diving. He also loves to travel the world and learn new languages; he is currently proficient in Spanish, French, Marathi and Hindi.

Dr . Deshmukh repaired three tears on my left shoulder 20 years ago and I have had no other problems with it since. Now I am having a similar problem on the right one and I would not go to anyone but him. He is the best! He is a brilliant surgeon and has the bedside manner as well. I find that Dr Deshmukh is very reliable, detailed, knowledgeable, and extremely competent on providing information on your injuries. He is very informative of your injuries, approach on surgery repair, informative on what he repaired and detailed on what is needed for recovery. Dr Deshmukh is an excellent orthopedic surgeon who did my total knee joint replacement. His team was excellent, including Brian who assisted him with my surgery. Amy and Jordan were my awesome nurses. There was another nurse that came in to help with my IV machine that was excellent as well. Dr Burton, my anesthesiologist gave me a great nerve block which lasted about 18 hours.He also did a spinal and sedation, My surgery went very well!

Follow up visit: It's been almost 6 months since Dr. Deshmukh replaced my completely worn out, arthritic shoulder, and I can say the result has been fantastic. The chronic pain is gone, almost full range of motion has been restored, and I keep getting stronger every day as I return to my normal activities. The surgery experience was excellent. I had very little discomfort and was able to manage the post-surgical pain very well. Physical therapy was an important part of my recovery, which was handled by the superb PT staff (Patrick). Before my total knee replacement, I could barely walk around a small neighborhood block. I thought avoiding surgery was the best thing to do. Injections gave me some temporary relief, but stopped working after a couple years. Now, it's been a few years since my surgery and I'm absolutely delighted with the results. I can easily walk 3 miles every day, bike long distances, weight train and do absolutely anything I want to do without limitations. I love my new knee! Dr. Deshmukh is a fantastic surgeon! The best orthopedic doctor I have even seen. I broke my humerus four years ago. A different doctor put a rod in my arm and it was not done correctly. I lost range of motion and has zero strength in the arm and shoulder. Within two weeks of Dr. Deshmukh performing corrective surgery on my shoulder I could tell the difference. It's been 3 1/2 months since he performed the surgery and my range of motion is back! I can reach the top shelf in the closet, push open doors, open cans etc. Can't say enough. I had shoulder surgery 11 months ago with Dr deshmukh for rotator cuff & bicep repair my bicep tendon was not even attached to my shoulder anymore. Dr deshmukh & both of his pa’s Brian & William were excellent, professional, compassionate & competent. My recovery was a bit longer and complicated by my pre existing bilateral radial tunnel syndrome unrelated to my shoulder but they were able to improvise and think out of the box to work around it to make me more comfortable. Having my shoulder in that fixed position in sling for 8 weeks & strengthening exercises in therapy exacerbated my radial tunnel issue. They took very good care of me till the end when I was dcd in august. Never was anyone rushed or did not spend adequate time with me addressing my questions or needs. My surgeon was Dr. Deshmukh for right knee revision. During a visit to my physical therapist, she found that my knee was extremely unstable due to a botched total knee replacement, and thought it needed surgery. She reached out to Dr. Deshmukh via text and he responded to her within my hour PT session. He made a special effort to get me in the following week so we could discuss. During my visit, I had x-rays and a complete consultation. We talked about the risks, the benefits, what to expect with a revision and so on. Using their Surgery Center, I had surgery as out-patient weeks later. During this entire time of initial contact, evaluation, surgery, post-op and follow-up, I have nothing but positive things to say about Dr. Deshmukh and his staff. All communication was easy to understand and given I am not a medical expert, still made sense to me. Everyone, including Dr Deshmukh, are extremely easy to contact and work with (appt changes, medication updates, etc), and are highly professional while being a fellow human being. Again, I cannot say enough about this team of professionals. I am now 12 weeks post-op, and can report my knee has not felt this good in 15 years and the amount of pain during and after the operation was minimal. Unbelievably proffessional. Dr. Deshmuhk attended me with my worn out knee for years until it was finally time for a replacement. The operation was flawless and I was in PT the very next day. After 18 months of increasing shoulder pain which ultimately resulted in the inability to swing a golf club, I was referred to Dr. Deshmukh. From that first meeting I knew I was in good hands. Dr Rahul, has great bed side manners. He is extremely easy to understand. And he doesn’t use all those $10 words that he clearly knows but chose to speak so I could clearly understand that there is nothing mechanically wrong with my shoulder.The physical therapy that I received with Dawn at Brooks Rehab in Mandarin was excellent. Between Dr Rahuls orders and Dawns instructions and help, my shoulder has been able to get back around 80% of my range of motion and with a lot less pain. The next round of PT will hopefully give my shoulder and the supporting muscles their strength back. I only wish JAX Orthopedic Institutes drs. had cared enough after they repaired my should, to follow up with the proper Physical therapy treatment and muscle strengthening that Dr Rahul prescribed. I had my shoulder replacement on March 4 by Dr Deshmukh. At noon on March 7 th I stopped my pain meds as I literally was experiencing NO PAIN from the procedure. (a total surprise from my own expectations!) I wanted a second opinion with a different orthopedic group regarding my diagnosed torn rotator cuff. Southeast Orthopedic Specialists (SOS) randomly gave me a consult with their Dr. Deshmukh-Lucky Me! Dr. Deshmukh performed rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder that had been painful for a long time. We knew there were several tears indicated by the MRI. Dr. Deshmukh found massive damage at the time of surgery and spent the time needed to repair the shoulder. After rehab I am completely pain free and have full mobility in my shoulder. I developed bone spurs and severe arthritis in my right shoulder, resulting in the severing of the bicep tendon, excruciating pain and almost total loss of mobility. Following a failed surgery by another doctor, which resulted in almost no gain in mobility and even more pain after almost 4 months of therapy, I contacted Dr. Deshmukh (at the advice of my Rheumatologist) and he recommended a reverse shoulder replacement. I have had amazing results with Dr. Deshmukh. In late 2016, I had knee replacement and my physical therapist said she had never seen a person recover so quickly and have such a minimal scar. In 2018, I had reverse shoulder replacement with Dr. D and he told me I would probably never reach behind my hip again with that hand. He worked his magic, I did the PT, and I have almost full mobility. Again, I don't think a plastic surgeon would have done a better job on the incision closure. The PAC's Bryan Tardiff and Ryan Sutton are an integral and critical part of the team. I had a knee replacement performed by Dr. Deshmukh on March 9,2017. Dr. Desmukh did a great job. Before I went to him I had not been able to hardly do anything because my knee was so bad. The Dr. and his whole staff went far above my expectations with my level of care. I now am able to not only do my own housework but also do anything else I need to do. I saw Dr. Deshmukh for three years for my arthritic shoulder and he helped me manage the pain until I was ready to have surgery and it had become medically necessary for relief. Dr. Deshmukh performed a reverse shoulder replacement and immediately post op the pain was gone. On vacation I hurt both shoulders playing golf 6 straight days. After an MRI on each I was told that I had separated a tendon and mussel on my left and had bone spurs on my right. Surgery on the left was scheduled before Christmas and started my recovery over the holiday. I have had three knee replacements and understand joint surgery recovery pain. I had a detached superspinatus, another torn tendon in my rotator cuff, slightly torn bicep and some bone spurs which probably sawed off the superspinatus to begin with. I heard Dr. Deshmukh was the best and now I believe it. After reading the narrative about what he did in the surgery, I was absolutely amazed. Dr. Deshmukh is a miracle worker. I had gotten advice from people who had similar surgeries from other docs and they said they would never do it again. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I did exactly what they said to do. No big risks. It has been 8 1/2 weeks and I already have full range back. I also have a great PT and was in decent shape before the surgery. All that helped. I am a swimmer and am already back in the pool, although not anything overhead. PT says I mainly have to re-strengthen the muscles around the rebuilt shoulder. Ryan Sutton, Dr. D's PA, has also given great guidance. Overall, I could not have asked for a better experience out of something I entered into with a bit of fear and trepidation. Dr Deshmukh provided me with a new knee on Nov 30, 2017. While this was the first major surgery for me, Dr Deshmukh and his associates explained the process in such a way that I my fears were allayed and my questioned were answered thoroughly. When I first met Dr. Deshmukh and he informed me I needed significant shoulder surgery I jokingly told him I would be headed to the Keys in five months and needed to be ready by then for a couple of weeks of fishing. In 2010, Dr. Deshmukh operated on my right shoulder - rotator cuff tear and my surgery was a success. When my knee was hurting, I sought Dr. Deshmukh. I suffered from a traumatic accident which caused my left shoulder to completely dislocate, I immediately relocated my own shoulder out of shear instinct and adrenaline. I caused so much damage in doing so. After a month of dealing with insurances and daily dislocations(up to 11 times a day) I got in to see Dr D. I had severe rotator cuff damage from a fall. After a local orthopedic surgeon recommended rehab and the vague possibility of arthroscopic repair, I tried the rehab which did not work. Dr. Deshmukh examined my shoulder and an MRI of it. He found hairline fractures in my shoulder that had been previously missed. After giving my bones time to heal, he performed the surgery and prescribed rehab beginning a few days thereafter. He is an excellent and caring doctor.
